David White

I studied graphic art part time at the University of Marburg (Germany) from 1970-1971.  After a career in education where I specialised in the teaching of English, I returned to art in 2012.  I work in ink, watercolour and acrylic paint, often combining all these media.  I also like to make mono prints based on photographs. The things that inspire me are: the local landscape, jazz music, plants from my garden and oriental art. I am also interested in intertextuality in art: for example my painting called The Goldfinch Escapes which is a re-imagining of the famous painting by Carel Fabritious (1654).

I make mono prints in two ways.  Sometimes I make a plate by scratching into a polystyrene sheet as with this picture.

Sometimes I start with a photograph which I transfer to watercolour paper and hand finish with paint.  In this picture of Roz Sluman, a local jazz musician,  I made a collage first.

Poppy seed heads from my garden inspired this mixed media piece for which I used acrylic ink and watercolour.

Recently I have been experimenting with using gouache paint to achieve flat plains of colour.  This is a picture of the bridge at Arles.  Vincent van Gogh famously painted this bridge although the one he painted was blown up in World War 2.

Sometimes I can get political

I have also tried producing digital prints from my iPad.

Whatever I am doing, I am often tempted back to using watercolour and ink for images inspired by the orient.

I enjoy meeting fellow artists at CABAS evening sessions for encouragement and ideas.  The annual exhibitions at Wetheral and Tullie House, Carlisle are highlights for me.
